About Me

photo-1Candice Czubernat is a married gay Christian woman and mother of twins. She is the founder of The Christian Closet, a web-based counseling practice, she is also a writer, and one of the “10 Pro-LGBT Religious Women You Should Know” according to The Advocate Online. She has an M.A. in Counseling Psychology (LMHC & MFTI) and has worked in mental health for a decade. She specializes in seeing those needing a safe place to reconcile their faith with their sexual and gender identities. While she is an ‘out’ gay Christian, coming to accept her sexuality was a road filled with much pain and confusion. Her family was loving, but their Christian roots did not provide a context for her to accept being both gay and Christian. In her work at The Christian Closet she has come to find that there are hundreds of thousands of others who also connect with this plight and she counts it a privilege to have walked along countless people through the stories of their lives.

  1. Candice,

Randi Peterson recommended me to your site as I steward sexuality as a Christian woman over at RubySlippers.org

Would you be up for connecting with me about an interview?

I’d love to ask you some pressing questions about your work.

  2. My dear sister I love you but I disagree with your decision concerning the Church. Some of your bible quotations were misinterpreted. Jesus welcome sinners who are ready to give up their present situation and take Jesus way of living. I am not saying all Christians are perfect but the Bible do not encourage the church to even mention homosexuality in our midst. In 2 Corinthians 5:17 , the bible says when someone is in Christ she or he become a new born, old things have passed away.
David said I have been young and now am old but I have not seen descendant of righteous begging for food. Is not about someone who want to attend church service. Christianity is not about going to church alone but about meeting the” will of God”.
In Genesis 2, God created a man and a woman and commanded them to multiply on earth but not man on man or woman on woman. Homosexuality is totally against the initial plan of God for man and a woman.
Jesus welcome the adulteress woman to saved her life. Jesus knew that when she has life, she can change but if they kill her, she can’t reverse her life. Jesus told her go and sin no more. Jesus did not welcome any sinner to continue living in sin. The true Christian is about giving up your sin and following Christ.
I love you and can prevent anyone from harming or killing you because if you die, you can’t reverse your life but I cannot stand anywhere to defend gay rights because is against my faith in Jesus. I will not agree with anyone trying to kill a gay person.
The bible says in Deut 30:15 that I have put good and life and bad and death before you but I command you to choose life and good. We have so many things in this world but God want you to make good choice that will leads you to heaven.
God has been gracious to you to have education that you can read, listening and help other who can read but you are telling God you are more wise than Him. My sister life is very short so do something good to please God in order to preserve your soul for eternal life. Death that you see in this world is just sleeping before God. The moment you died, you will find yourself in another world that might not be good for you. you have to work on it now.

  3. David,

I believe your assertions are incorrect.

2 Corinthians 5:17: This is referring to past sins, including the “original sin” that everyone is born carrying — hence baptism. Accepting Jesus does not magically make you immune to sin; to be a Christian merely meas that you are a follower of Christ. Christians try to make the right choices and not sin, but they still do. They are as imperfect as any other human being.

What David did or did not say is of little importance to Christianity. He knew nothing of Christ, of course; he only knew God, and he was Jewish. Jesus came to earth and gave up his life to absolve people of their sins. The implication is that before Jesus came, no one was “saved,” not even a follower of God the Father. Jesus did much to revolutionize the “old ways” of the Old Testament.

Genesis 2: Yes, God did command man and woman to go forth and populate the earth. And that’s exactly what they did and what men and women continue to do. Just because homosexual individuals cannot “populate the earth” doesn’t automatically make them sinners. It may be contrary to God’s “initial plan,” but so were the teachings of Jesus. Also, regardless of what any Bible verse says, keep in mind that animals have been observed to engage in homosexual activity and that there are several animals that can change biological sex at will. They are as much God’s creations as anything else, right? I don’t think God has a problem with LGBTQA/MOGAI people. I think He has a problem with people who pass judgement and presume to speak for him. “Judge not lest you be judged;” don’t cast the first stone.

Again, I remind you that being a Christian does not automatically keep you from sin. A Christian can try their best to make the right choices, but they will still inevitably sin. It is the human condition. The difference is that Christians make a conscious effort to live righteously and they know that any sin they do commit will by absolved by God. And the result of Jesus’ sacrifice is eternal life; death is not the be-all, end-all.

“I love you and can prevent anyone from harming or killing you because if you die, you can’t reverse your life…” Do you realize what you’re saying here? You’re acknowledging that there are people out there — probably religiously motivated, like yourself — who believe it is right to murder people for no other reason than that they are homosexual. And yet your reason for trying to stop this from happening is so that she can “reverse [her] life?” Not because, you know, she is a human being and thus automatically a Child of God and so God loves her regardless of any sin she commits? “…but I cannot stand anywhere to defend gay rights because is against my faith in Jesus. I will not agree with anyone trying to kill a gay person.” How very thoughtful of you. Do you realize that for centuries, up until this very day and age, there were/are people whose marriages are more financially or politically motivated than anything else? Just look at the monarchies and nobles of Europe. You really think that two people marrying each other for love, regardless of sex, is somehow less righteous than a heterosexual couple marrying for money or power?

And as for your last paragraph, let me just quote our Lord Jesus Christ Himself: ” ‘Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, “Let me take the speck out of your eye,” when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.’ ” Matthew 7:3-5.

  4. I read one of your posts and your about page and I followed you. I feel like I can gain some spiritual insight that I have lost in my (horrible) experience with the church that has caused me to question many things about Christianity and God.

I am 24. I consider myself to be bisexual. And I engage in the BDSM lifestyle. I had a Pastor condone a family friend’s verbal and emotional abuse of me, throwing away my stuff and hacking my computer. The pastor told me that it was okay because they were trying to “drive Satan out of me.”

So my feelings about God and Christianity are not the best right now. Haven’t been for the last year. But at the same time I know that there’s something missing in my life.

  5. First of all, let me say that ONLY God can & will judge people, so I am not trying to cast any judgement here, at all!!! We all have our sins that we answer to God for……….
The Body of Christ DOES Love You and your family! BUT, there is this thing called SIN. God is a Holy & Righteous and Just God, and He is too pure to allow UNREPENTANT sin (of any kind) to continue and foster in the Church.Jesus said that “A little Leaven Leavens the Whole Batch” I am sure you know of that verse. The world is wrong when they say that homosexuality is not a sin, and you are basing your life on that lie. The Church should be very kind & loving to you and your “family” BUT they should deny you fellowship & participation in events, because you are trying to gloss over your sinful lifestyle, and from your post, it sounds like you are not very repentant of your sins. Honestly, more Churches should be exclusive of ANY people living in sin, be it gay, straight, or whatever.
I noticed you quoted several scriptures about Jesus loving & welcoming people, as is true! BUT, you seemed to ignore the Scriptures that condemn people in unrepentant sexual sin. I am sure you know most all of them, so I will only list a few here. Romans 1, 1 Corinthians 6, Galatians 5, Matthew 7, Colossians 3, and Revelation 21:8…
Ephesians 5 is one reason why the Church shuns you, until you Repent. James 5:19-20…
I am not trying to “beat you up” but rather point out in love the answer to your questions. I don’t even know you or your partner, and I certainly don’t claim to have all the answers, but Jesus Does! IF you repent of your sins, and stop practicing lesbianism, you both will be welcomed! BUT, if you don’t repent of your sins, then you are only fooling yourself when you call yourself a Christian.
PLEASE read Isaiah 59:1-3. I do not even know if you will see or read my reply, since you have almost 500 replies already. Some of them are good, honest replies, some are from others that are deceived like you, in to thinking there is nothing wrong with being a LGBTQ, that you were born that way. Truth is, NOBODY was ever born gay! That is one of the lies that is straight from the father of lies himself- Satan. He has VERY MANY people on the path to destruction with his lies!!! PLEASE don’t be another one! I DO care about you & your “family” and I will offer my help. If there is anything I can do for you,(or anyone caught up in this sin) please contact me through my blog, and I will be more than willing to try & help you!!! (Sailor Dale Cares) PLEASE REPENT!!!!

    • Sailordale,
God bless you for your posting. People are misquoting bible to justify themselves. It is good to rebuke your brother or sister to know the truth. People are now afraid to stand for the truth. I don’t hate any LGBT members but it is good to let them know the practice is not biblical. The society may legalize it but it does not means is acceptable in the sight of God. Like your stand. My little advice to you is that not all pastors are correct so open your eye. Because Jesus said in Mathew 24 that many false prophets and teachers will come and deceive a lot of Christians especially the true Christians.Thank you.

  6. Candice,
I think Candice is too quick to pass judgement but not ready to change her mind. God has given our will to us but He is going to judge us on our choices. You said I know nothing about Jesus. I know he came to died for our sins. The statement I made that Jesus welcome any sinner who is ready to repent and live a new life but not somebody who is not ready to change. You love Jesus but you are not ready to leave LBGT behind. Nobody is perfect, even Isaiah said I’m living among sinners, things that we see on tv and internet make us sin and God will save us through grace but you can’t be a member of LBGT and call yourself a follower of Christ. Something that is abominable in most societies.
Attending church is not guarantee to heaven because the agents of the devil are setting up churches to deceive unstable minds. Read Romans 1 to the end. People have acquire knowledge and now think they are more wiser than God. Sometimes, you need to sit down, analysis the whole parts of your body and know God planned your body. In Genesis 2, the bible says a man shall leave his parents and join the wife so that they become one flesh. If you have really notice this, when a man and woman live for sometime, they resemble each other. Are you a wife or husband ? My sister let’s maintain what God created as it is and give glory to him.
Do not be deceive in short freedom in America. The bible says everything is permissible but not everything is beneficial. You may satisfy your personal desire by joining LBGT but ask yourself, does it pleased God? The bible says there is a way that seems right to a man but the end is death. If you actually believe in Jesus, you will never join LBGT. you can called yourself a Christian but it does not guarantee you heaven.
Homosexual is abominable. my sister run away from it and save your soul. Read also about Polycab.A man who stood for ChristThank you

  7. To Sailordale and to David…

I don’t see any misinterpretations coming out of Scripture based on what Candice is saying. What I do see is a contradiction by your statements to the very message of the Gospel of Christ. I think the most poignant story is the Parable of the Wedding Feast. It’s too long to post on here, but I would encourage you to read it. The gist is, those invited to the banquet refused to come. So, the king sends out his servants and tells them to “invite to the banquet anyone you find” (I want to emphasize the phrase ‘ANYONE YOU FIND’) another translation also states “anyone who wants to come”… and “So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, the bad as well as the good, and the wedding hall was filled with guests” (NRSV, Matt 21:1-14). The point is non exclusivity and non partiality which is also echoed by Paul in Galations 3:28 when he says, “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”

Our very natures defy the original intention and design of God by our sin. So, to say specifically that homosexuality defies God’s original intention is wrong. Just by being human and by nature, sinners, we defy the original plan; hence the need for Christ. This is confirmed in Romans when Paul says, “There is no one who is righteous, not even one; there is no one who has understanding; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned aside, together they have become worthless…(NRSV, Rom 3:10-12). So, how can you say someone who is seeking after Christ and who clearly has been blessed by Christ through her faith is condemned by God? We do not seek Christ on our own accord. We are called by the Holy Spirit.

Regarding the the sexual immorality texts and those which specifically address homosexual acts, contextualy these are referring to temple prostitution committed within Gentile cultures and Paul is urging Gentiles to stay away from these practices. Additionally, the same is required in the Old Testament to keep Israel separate from Gentile, pagan worship practices involving temple prostitution. A great exegetical study by an Evangelical Scholar was done by Mark Achtemeier called “The Bible’s Yes to Same Sex Marriage.” He once condemned same sex marriage and even worked vigorously to oppose it in the church. After having personal friendships with gay people and reexamining Scripture, he realized that the traditional view was not in line whatsoever with the teaching of the Gospels. I highly recommend reading another perspective just to see another believing scholar’s view.
